This database indexes death records recorded by the New Jersey Department of Health. Records include death certificates, as well as some burial, reburial, transit, and disinterment permits (denoted by "BP", "RP", "TP", and "DI" respectively).
Data is being entered from the original Department of Health indexes. Data entry is ongoing, and is currently complete for June 1878-June 1893. Records for additional fiscal years (July 1-June 30 of the following year) will be added as they are completed. The entire collection will eventually include records through December 31, 1900. The database currently indexes over 400,500 records.
Location refers to the county and locality where the death was registered, and in the case of permits, where the permit was issued. In cases where the index did not indicate age and/or sex "U" has been entered into the field. The date on the various permits refers to the date the permit was issued, and the actual date of death may be earlier, sometimes significantly earlier. To truncate a search term, do a keyword search, remove the ending of the word, and add an asterisk (*) to the end of the word.
Names are entered exactly as they are recorded in the original indexes. Searching alternate spellings is advised. For example, names like O'Neil or O'Hara are often recorded without the apostrophe, Oneil or Ohara. To search for persons who were unknown or unidentified at the time of death search for "unknown" in the last name field.
Results are limited to 500 records, and may be sorted by clicking on the title of each column.
